Union County Woman Airlifted To Hospital Following Crash On I-78

Update: 2 cars collided on I-78 in Springfield Thursday causing a Union County woman to drive off the highway, hit 2 trees and overturn.

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — A Union County woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital following a serious accident on I-78 eastbound in Springfield Township on Thursday morning.

At 7:47 a.m. a GMC Arcadia and a Toyota Corolla collided east of exit 45 for CR 527/Glenside Avenue causing the Corolla to drive off highway up onto a grass embankment where it crashed into two trees, NJ State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said.

The Corolla had overturned causing the driver, Lisa Takahashi, 41, of Plainfield to become trapped inside, Goez said.

Once freed by responding emergency officials, Takahashi was then airlifted via medivac to University Hospital in Newark with serious injuries, Goez said.

The driver of the GMC, Michael Castellano, 50, of Hackettstown was uninjured. No summonses were issued at this time.

The crash had caused the right and center lanes to close for about three hours. Rubbernecking also caused delays at the crash scene.

Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad was one of the responding emergency officials on the scene.
