Saint James the Apostle School Students Have an Out of This World Experience!

On April 6, 2016, Saint James the Apostle School students in Grades 4-6 participated in the unforgettable Living in Space Experience. This in-school field trip provided the students the opportunity to learn more about space travel, space shuttles, astronaut preparation, and some of the difficulties experienced while living on the space station. Commander Lisa Irwin and Commander KB Burwell selected student volunteers to demonstrate how difficult it is for astronauts to scratch an itch while in their space suits and also what it’s like for them to sleep in sleeping bags that are attached to a wall!

Students loved the hands on aspect of the program. In pairs, they were able to simulate activities that real astronauts may practice before they blast off into space. These activities included things that test disorientation activities, reaction times, and tests that restrict movement.

Playing Perfection in Space (from left to right) are Ethan Pinho, Jon-Paul Farris, and Jorge Cubero. Students tested their fine motor skills maneuvering small game pieces into their proper place playing the game of Perfection wearing oversized gloves in 45 seconds.

Maybe one day we will see one of our Saint James students become a real astronaut and take off on a space adventure!
