Springfield Opens Cooling Centers As Extreme Heat Watch Takes Effect

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Springfield officials have opened two cooling centers to help residents stay safe during an Extreme Heat Watch issued by the National Weather Service.

The watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Saturday evening, with heat index values expected to reach 110 degrees during the day.

Residents can cool off at the Chisholm Community Center, located at 100 South Springfield Ave., open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and at the Springfield Free Public Library (66 Mountain Ave.), open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Both facilities will be closed Friday through Sunday (July 3–5).

Town officials encourage residents to wear lightweight clothing, drink plenty of water, recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek air-conditioned spaces.

Seniors, people with chronic health or mental health conditions, and households without air conditioning are considered especially vulnerable.

Residents are also urged to check on friends, family members, and neighbors during the heat event.
