1. Summit Fire Department Partners With Red Cross To Hold Blood Drives (patch.com) — Summit residents are invited to donate blood at a series of monthly Red Cross drives hosted in the city’s new firehouse on Broad Street, running from May through September. Each event will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and city leaders are encouraging people to both support the blood supply and check out the updated firehouse space.
2. Controversial Maple Street Closure Approved In Summit (patch.com) — Maple Street in downtown Summit will go car-free this summer after the Common Council narrowly approved a pedestrian plaza and outdoor dining plan running June 18 through Sept. 7. Supporters say it will boost downtown businesses and community life, while opponents worry about traffic, safety, late-night activity, and legal questions around the closure.
3. Don't Miss What's Happening In Downtown Summit (patch.com) — Downtown Summit has a full slate of warm-weather activities coming up, including the Summit Downtown Farmers Market every Sunday through Dec. 20 on DeForest Avenue. Families can also look forward to Family Fun Night on June 4, World Cup watch parties in June and July, and the Summit Street Sounds live music series on Thursday and Friday evenings this summer.
4. Union County HEART Grants Awarded To Several Summit Arts, Cultural Organizations (tapinto.net) — Several Summit arts and community organizations just received new Union County HEART grants, bringing fresh funding for local cultural programs. Groups like the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Vivid Stage, Stony Hill Players, SAGE Eldercare, and The Connection will use the support to expand arts, history, and humanities offerings that Summit residents can enjoy.
5. Summit woman honored for saving neighbor's life (southwestregionalpublishing.com) — A Summit neighbor’s quick 911 call after finding an injured resident on March 13 earned her a Certificate of Good Citizenship from Summit Police Chief Mel Ortiz. Officials say Karen Wolf’s fast action, along with help from neighbor Callie Clanton, shows how attentive residents play a crucial role in keeping Summit’s neighborhoods safe.
