SUMMIT, NJ — The Summit Public School District is among five New Jersey districts recognized by the state Department of Education for second language instruction programs.

The recognition highlights both world language and dual language immersion programs that state officials said are being used as models for other districts.

The districts were honored in Trenton following a review process that included applications and site visits by state education officials and educators from across New Jersey.

Officials said the programs were selected based on criteria designed to identify strong instructional models in language education.

“Research in cognitive science shows that learning and using more than one language strengthens the brain and builds essential skills such as attention, flexibility, problem-solving, and self-regulation,” said Dr. Lily Laux, Commissioner of Education.

State Board of Education President Kathy Goldenberg said multilingual education supports students beyond academics.

“Multilingualism honors students’ sense of self, expands opportunities for students, and strengthens our communities,” Goldenberg said.

According to the Department of Education, the selected programs will serve as model sites for other districts to observe instructional practices.

Summit was recognized in the world language category for its K-5 program.

Other world language recipients included Egg Harbor Township and West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District.

Dual language immersion awards went to the Hoboken Dual Language Charter School, North Plainfield School District, and West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District.
