Delivery Driver Crashes Into Pole In Summit

The crash shut down a stretch of Broad Street for more than 16 hours and knocked out power in the area.

SUMMIT, NJ — A delivery driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a utility pole on Broad Street, leading to a long road closure and a temporary power outage over the weekend, according to police.

The crash happened on May 16 at about 8:33 a.m. near 396 Broad Street, when a single vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Airbags deployed on impact.

Police said, the driver, a 40-year-old man from Paterson who was working for a food delivery service at the time, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Overlook Hospital for treatment.

The impact caused significant damage to the utility pole, which required JCP&L crews to respond and carry out a full replacement.

Broad Street was closed between Chestnut Avenue and Cedar Street for more than 16 hours while crews completed the work. Power in the surrounding area was also shut off during the repairs.

The roadway reopened and power was restored early Sunday morning after the replacement work was completed.
