SUMMIT, NJ — A new nutrition and support program for mothers and young children is opening in Summit, offering families access to food assistance, breastfeeding support, and health education services.
The Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program site will be located at the Summit Community Center at 100 Morris Avenue and is being launched by the Westfield Regional Health Department in partnership with RWJBarnabas Health Trinitas.
WIC is a federally funded U.S. Department of Agriculture program that provides supplemental nutrition support for eligible New Jersey residents. It serves pregnant women, postpartum mothers (up to six months after pregnancy), breastfeeding mothers (up to a child’s first birthday), and children up to age 5.
In addition to food benefits, the program offers nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals to other community services.
Families interested in enrolling begin with a short pre-screening process that takes about 15 minutes. After that, staff follow up to schedule an appointment.
The Summit site is part of the Westfield Regional Health Department, which provides services across several Union County communities including Chatham Borough, Fanwood, Garwood, Madison, Mountainside, New Providence, Roselle Park, Summit, and Westfield.
Appointments can be made by calling 908-994-5141. Hours include weekday availability from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some extended Monday and Wednesday evening hours until 6:30 p.m., and select Saturday hours until noon, according to program information.
