SUMMIT, NJ — Downtown Summit is preparing to turn part of the city center into a public viewing space this summer, with two World Cup watch parties planned alongside a travel advisory tied to expected transit crowds during tournament match days.
Summit Downtown, Inc. announced that the Bank Street parking lot will host outdoor watch parties where residents can gather to watch World Cup matches on a large screen. Both events are designed as community viewing experiences with food and drink options available on site.
The first watch party is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, featuring a screening of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. A second gathering is planned for Sunday, July 19, when the tournament’s final match will be shown.
Organizers say the events will include food trucks and a beer and wine garden, along with seating and a large outdoor screen for viewing.
At the same time, city officials are advising residents to prepare for heavier-than-usual transit activity during World Cup match days at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
According to the City of Summit, large crowds are expected to travel through the region throughout the tournament, with many relying on NJ Transit service to reach games. Officials say this is likely to create congestion on rail lines and at stations serving the area, including Summit.
Residents are being urged to plan ahead on designated match days, which include June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30, and July 5 and 19. Those with flexible schedules are encouraged to consider adjusting travel or working remotely where possible, while others using transit should allow extra time for trips.
The advisory notes that delays and crowding are most likely in the hours before and after matches.
Together, the watch parties and travel guidance highlight how Summit is preparing locally for a global sporting event that is expected to bring increased activity across the region throughout the summer.
