UNION COUNTY, NJ — Union County has opened registration for its free Sensory-Friendly Summer Camp, giving teens and young adults with documented disabilities an opportunity to explore nature through a week of outdoor activities, hands-on learning and sensory-based experiences.
The camp will take place Aug. 17 through Aug. 21 at Trailside Nature & Science Center in Mountainside. It is open to eligible Union County residents ages 12 to 21 and will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
County officials said the program is designed to provide a welcoming environment where participants can enjoy the outdoors while engaging in activities tailored to a variety of sensory needs.
"We take great pride in offering programs that bring people together in a supportive and welcoming environment," said Union County Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek. "This camp not only encourages exploration and learning, but also helps create a sense of belonging for every participant. Designed with sensory-friendly supports in mind, it gives individuals with disabilities a comfortable way to spend time outdoors."
Throughout the week, campers will explore the Watchung Reservation through guided nature walks, interactive games, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, storytelling and opportunities to meet live animals. The activities are designed to engage participants through sight, sound, smell and touch while introducing them to the plants and wildlife found in Union County's largest park.
According to the county, the program is intended for Union County residents ages 12 to 16 and young adults ages 17 to 21 with documented disabilities. Participants must be able to independently manage toileting and feeding, though individuals who need occasional prompting or redirection are welcome.
County officials noted that the camp is not designed for individuals who require one-on-one staffing, and enrollment is determined after an application and interview process based on whether the program can meet each participant's needs.
The camp is free, but space is limited.
Applications are now being accepted online, and county officials encourage interested families to apply as soon as possible.
