Back to School with the Harrisons

Summit students and siblings Claire and Malcom Harrison share their thoughts, hopes and jitters about going back to school this year.

The Harrison's are pros at back-to-school.

While many families spend the morning of the first day of school scrambling to find notebooks, last minute permission slips and shoes before the late bell rings, the morning of Sept. 7, 2010 at the Harrison's home on Ashland Road was calm and collected. Except for a misplaced digital camera found in the TV room, and an almost-forgotten lunchbox, everything was in its place and ready to go ahead of schedule.

Although the family has perfected the school drill for more than a decade with their daugher, Claire, 14, and son, Malcom, 10, this year marked Claire's first day as a student at Summit High School. Despite being the first sibling to go to Summit High, Claire said she was more excited than nervous.

"I'm really excited about going to high school," she said. "I'm excited to see all of my friends I that I haven't seen all summer because I've been away a lot, but I'm also excited to meet new people like upperclassmen and maybe even some people in my grade that  I didn't know before. I think it'll be really fun"

Malcom, who is entering fourth grade at Brayton School, said he wishes summer was longer.

"I definitely no doubt about it wish that I had about a month more summertime," he said. "That would feel really good. My summer was pretty fun but I just wish I had more time."

Claire said the camps for various high school related activities were a early jump on the school year for her.

"I think I'm ready to go back to school," she said. "I mean, I've been doing debate camps and band camps and soccer camps since the beginning of August so I feel like I'm already a part of the high school."
