NJ Transit: $49M Rehab Project Approved At Elizabeth Station

NJ Transit: The renovated station will include new inbound and outbound station buildings, longer platforms and improvements to ADA access.

ELIZABETH, NJ — The NJ Transit Board of Directors approved a $49.2 million reconstruction effort at the Elizabeth train station on Tuesday.

The project features new inbound and outbound station buildings, longer platforms for additional boarding capacity as well as improvements to ADA access, security and communications systems and “customer experience” improvements, NJ Transit stated.

“This project is a perfect example of the investments we are making to restore the rail system,” NJ Transit Executive Director Kevin Corbett said. “A new, modern and efficient station capable of handling the demands of this important Northeast Corridor stop is critical. This project is emblematic of the turn-around we are beginning at NJ Transit.”

The NJ Transit Board of Directors approved the final design and construction contract with Anselmi and DeCicco in the amount of $49.2 million. In addition, the board approved a contract for construction management services with WSP USA Inc. in the amount of $4.7 million.

The total project cost is estimated at $71 million and construction is scheduled to finish in the summer of 2022, NJ Transit stated.

“When complete, customers will enjoy new station buildings, longer platforms for improved boarding of 12-car trains, climate-controlled platform shelters, additional elevators, improved ADA access, new customer communication systems and additional security elements,” NJ Transit officials stated.

Final design and construction will allow for the following:

  • New inbound and outbound station buildings
  • Restoration of the existing pedestrian tunnel
  • Rebuilding existing high-level platforms with construction of approximately 300 linear feet on each platform to accommodate 12-car train boarding capacity
  • Additional connections to the public right-of-way
  • New platform canopies and climate-controlled platform shelters
  • ADA access improvements including two new elevators, rehabilitation of existing two elevators and new ADA ramps
  • New passenger communication systems and variable message signs
  • Security systems
  • Restoration of the existing plaza area
  • Installation of TransitArts elements
