The name has not been released to protect the family's privacy.

A sixth-grade Summit School District student has died, Superintendent June Chang said in a letter to the school community. The student was enrolled at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.

The name of the student has not been released to protect the family's privacy. Chang noted that the student's death was a "non-contagious, isolated medical incident."

Chang said the district would not be cancelling the upcoming "STOKES sixth grade weekend," a leadership retreat for sixth graders at a nearby camp. Support staff will be at the camp to provide assistance.

Dear Summit Parents, Staff and Community,

Find out what's happening in Summitfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

This morning, we learned of the tragic loss of a Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School sixth grade student.

The untimely death of a child is a tragedy no family should have to endure. As a school district and Summit community, we share this loss and offer our support and sympathies to the family.

As we approach the STOKES sixth grade weekend, I know the days will be met with sadness. However, I encourage students to go on the trip, as planned, and spend time together. We will have additional support staff available at STOKES for those who may wish to speak. Please know that this was a non-contagious, isolated medical incident.

We are asking that you respect the family's privacy at this time. We will have counselors available throughout the district to all students and staff beginning tomorrow and throughout the coming weeks.

Sincerely,
June Chang
Superintendent of Schools
