FORKED RIVER – Join children’s book author and illustrator Katy Tanis for an art exhibit reception, author talk, and book signing, along with a coloring craft for younger readers at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, June 29 at the Lacey Branch of the Ocean County Library. The exhibit, Love Under the Sea, is on display now until June 29 and features artwork from Tanis’s new book of the same title.
Katy Tanis grew up in northern New Jersey, where she spent most of her days exploring imagined jungles with her three siblings. Her father’s hardware store provided endless supplies for her pursuits. She now lives at the Jersey Shore. She has an MA in Biology from Miami University, a BS in Computer Science and a BFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University.
Her career began in the fashion industry, travelling around the world to meet artisans and learn about their crafts: woodblock printing in Kyoto, graffiti in Berlin, ceramics in KwaZulu-Natal, Kantha embroidery in Bangalore, and more. All these experiences help to inform her work.
Katy highlights unusual and lesser-known animals and explores evolution and biogeography concepts in her work. She frequently travels around the globe to immerse herself in new ecosystems, like Madagascar’s spiny forest and Borneo’s tropical forest. She has a soft spot for the weirdos of the animal kingdom and has never met a color she didn’t like.
Tanis’s award-winning art has been seen on products and in art shows around the world. Selections of her art and more information can be found on her website daughterearth.com.
