Cooling Center Offered, Farmers Market Canceled In South Toms River Due To Heat

The heat index is expected to be above 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

SOUTH TOMS RIVER, NJ — South Toms River will have a cooling center available to those in need Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures soar above 100 degrees.

In addition, the borough's recreation department announced that Thursday's farmers market has been canceled because of the heat.

The cooling shelter will be at the municipal building, 19 Double Trouble Road, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

If shelter is needed after 4 p.m. call 732-349-0403, ext. 133.

The recreation department said the high heat warning includes area beaches and waterfront areas, which will not offer much relief from the extreme heat event.

"After consulting with several regular vendors, South Toms River Recreation has made the difficult decision to cancel the Thursday, July 2nd Farmers Market in the interest of public safety," officials said. "This was not an easy decision to make, and we apologize for any inconvenience. We look forward to resuming the market next week on Thursday, July 9th."
