Police Chief Returns From Medical Leave In Toms River

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River Police Chief Guy Maire has returned to work, more than a month after he went out on leave due to a health issue.

Maire went out on leave in early June due to what Mayor Daniel Rodrick said was a medical issue, and said Maire was anticipated to be gone a few weeks.

At the time, multiple sources to Patch Maire had cleaned out his desk, which Rodrick insisted was not the case.

A photo later circulated on social media showing Maire's nameplate had been removed from outside of his office.

Rodrick on Thursday said there is an internal affairs investigation underway to determine who removed the nameplate from outside his office and released the photo of it missing to social media.

"It’s shameful that there are folks within the police department who leaked this information to social media platforms and the press," Rodrick said at the time Maire went on leave. "Chief Maire deserves all the same level of privacy as any other employee."

"I'm pleased that he is in good health and back on the job protecting our community," Rodrick said Thursday. "I'm thankful that we have him."

Maire is the third police chief to serve since Rodrick became mayor, following Mitch Little, who retired in August 2024, and Peter Sundack, who retired in April after taking leave in the summer of 2025.
