Event Details

Long Beach Island Library, 217 S Central Ave, Surf City, NJ, 08008

SURF CITY – One of New Jersey’s greatest treasures stands tall and gleams quietly on northern Long Beach Island. Learn all about its past and about the dedicated group that ensures its future. Join us for “Barnegat Lighthouse: Still Lighting the Way” at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch, 2 PM Thursday, May 22.

Friends of the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park member Charlotte Banks will take you through nearly 200 adventurous years in which Old Barney was built and rebuilt, underwent jurisdictional shifts, watched for enemy ships in wartime, provided safe passage for friendly mariners nearing the rugged coast and became the centerpiece of one of New Jersey’s finest state parks.

Since chartering as a non-profit organization in 2007, the Friends of the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park raised funds that enabled them to replace its beacon and lantern windows, beautify the park, and modernize the Visitors’ Center and security systems. The Friends continue to maintain the beacon and tower glass and oversee maintenance of the gardens.
