Community Medical Center Offering Free Cardiac And Concussion Screenings

Space for screenings for young athletes is limited, pre-registration required

The Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes is offering free cardiac and concussion screenings to from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 18 at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

The screenings can detect hidden heart problems and provide concussion baseline screening. Pre-registration is required, since space is limited. To register for the screenings, please email teamlink@barnabashealth.org.

The cardiac screenings are offered to players from six to 18.

“Ninety percent of sudden cardiac deaths in young athletes occur during or after athletic activities and hidden heart conditions is often the cause,” according to a CMH press release. “This cardiac screening will help to identify players, age six to 18, who may require further testing or intervention.”

The concussion baseline screening is for ages 12 to 18 . The baseline study can help identity future problems.

“If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury, this screening test may be used to evaluate the severity of the head injury and determine when it is safe to return to play, the release states.

The screenings are being offered at Community Medical Center in collaboration with the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes, both part of Barnabas Health. The Morahan Center provides education, evaluation and assessment of sports injury and sports-related cardiac and concussion screenings.

Screenings are free of charge and a parent or guardian is asked to be present.
