Toms River East was evacuated after people smelled the odor of gas in the high school, said Michael Kenny, a spokesman for the Toms River Regional School District. That odor was traced to the high school's generators, he said, and Toms River East was dismissing classes early as a result.
At East Dover Elementary, the outage was brief and power had been restored, so classes at that school had resumed, Kenny said.
