A driver who fell asleep behind the wheel hit a utility pole and brought it down, causing a lengthy road closure in Toms River.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A driver who fell asleep behind the wheel crashed into a utility pole early Friday, Toms River police said.

The crash brought down the utility pole, disrupting traffic on Route 9 for much of the day on Friday, police said.

The road was closed in both directions between Clayton Avenue and West Whitty Road.
