Discover Services, Programs At Toms River Senior Center

An open house in April is scheduled for the public to see what's available.

TOMS RIVER, NJ -- Senior citizens and their families are invited to have some fun and check out the programs that the Toms River Senior Center has available at an upcoming open house.

The center, at 652 Garfield Ave., is holding the open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, according to a news release from the township.

According to executive director Joann Benson, the open house will be an opportunity for the public to better understand the services provided and to get to know active participants.

“We want to focus on the activities and services that our center provides," executive director Joann Benson said. "This open house is a chance for community members to come and see what we’re doing.”

The center provides a variety of physical activities. Yoga, line dancing and Zumba and various levels of exercise programs are available to seniors of all interests and skill levels. Other activities include watercolor, billiards, cards, games and more. The center also offers transportation services, trips, education and arts programs.

Admission is free and attendees can tour the center, meet the staff and volunteers, check out activities and programs, participate in free screenings, enjoy refreshments and register for door prizes.

“People can walk around the center and see what we have here. We can give them a tour, and they can pick up a copy of our newsletter to see what’s coming up,” Benson said.

The Senior Center serves as a community resource as well as an activity center, with information on Medicare and Medicaid, tax preparation and the Senior Freeze program.

“We hope the open house will bring new folks into the programs and bring people together that may have lived in Toms River all their lives and never met each other,” Benson said.
