Donovan Catholic Girl Sets Penn Relays Shot Put Record

Alyssa Wilson won the high school girls competition.

PHILADELPHIA -- A Donovan Catholic student set a meet record in the shot put at the Penn Relays on Thursday, beating the defending champion in the process.

Alyssa Wilson, a junior, recorded a throw of 15.71 meters -- 51 feet, 6.5 inches -- on her fourth of six throws to capture the high school girls championship, beating Nickolette Dunbar of Whippany Park by a tenth of a meter, according to the Penn Relays site.

Dunbar had set the previous record of 15.44 when she won the title in 2015, according to the site.

The victory at the prestigious Penn Relays caps what had already been a big week for Wilson, who broke her N.J. shot put record earlier in the week. According to NJ.com, Wilson threw the 8.8-pound ball 53 feet, 4-3/4 inches at the Georgian Court Invitational last week, besting her mark of 51 feet, 7-3/4 inches from August 2015. She also holds the state indoor shot put record, which is 54 feet, 11 inches, according to NJ.com.

NJ.com reported Wilson and Dunbar have been dueling in the shot put since last year. Dunbar beat Wilson on her last throw to win the Meet of Champions, the report said.
