Victim ID'd, Details Revealed In Fatal Bicycle Crash On Route 70

A bicyclist was killed Monday on Rt. 70 in Ocean County.

LAKEWOOD, NJ - A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car on Route 70 Monday in Lakewood, authorities said. The victim has been been identified, and information was revealed about the driver.

The accident happened at approximately 3:20 p.m., prompting the Lakewood Police Department to respond to the area of Buckingham Drive and Route 70, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Upon arrival, police observed the victim, later identified as Ralph Zarro, 61, of Lakewood, lying in the roadway with a bicycle in the shoulder. Zarro was pronounced deceased at 3:42 p.m., according to the OCPO.

Further investigation revealed that a 2014 Kia Forte, driven by a 38-year-old Toms River woman, was traveling east on Route 70 approaching the intersection at Buckingham Drive when Zarro entered the roadway against the pedestrian signal and was struck.

Route 70 was shut down from Shorrock Street going westbound, and from New Hampshire Avenue going eastbound, for several hours, according to the Ocean County Sheriff's Office.
