Football: Tough Night For Toms River North, Toms River South

Mariners shut out; Indians eliminated from playoff contention; Toms River East beaten by Lacey

Friday night was a tough night for football fans of Toms River schools.

Toms River North found itself on the losing end for the second straight week, falling 21-0 to Neptune in a nondivisional game in Toms River, according to the Shore Sports Network, while Toms River South traveled to Brick and had its hopes of making the state playoffs dashed in a Shore Conference Class A South loss to the Dragons, 34-14.

The Mariners (5-4) were in the sixth spot in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V power points standings coming into the weekend, behind Lenape (7-0), Rancocas Valley (6-1), Williamstown (6-2), Cherokee (4-3), and Brick Memorial (5-3). Only the first eight games count toward power points and playoff contention. Atlantic City (4-3), Egg Harbor (4-3) and Millville (3-4) all trail the Mariners. Southern Regional, which also was behind the Mariners in the bracket, was eliminated from contention in a 35-7 loss to Brick Memorial Friday night.
