Gas Leak Prompts Minor Evacuation At Ocean County College

There were no injuries in the incident, which affected just a small part of campus, Toms River police said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A damaged gas line led to the evacuation of two buildings at Ocean County College on Monday afternoon, Toms River police said.

The ruptured gas main was reported at 12:05 p.m., said Jillian Messina, media specialist for the Toms River Police Department. When police arrived Ocean County College security personnel were evacuating buildings 11 and 29 as a precaution, she said.

There were no injuries reported.

New Jersey Natural Gas crews responded to shut off the gas and replace the damaged line, and by 12:50 p.m. the two buildings were deemed safe and students and staff allowed to return, she said.

"We'd like to acknowledge this was collaborative effort between us, the Ocean County College security team, Toms River fire companies, Ocean County Sheriff 's Department, Ocean County Building Department, and Toms River Office of Emergency Management," Messina said. "We are proud to work so closely with all of our partnering agencies."
