Help Shower Toms River Woman With Cards For Her 100th Birthday

The coronavirus pandemic makes a traditional birthday celebration impossible; Helen's family is hoping readers will help make it special.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A lot has happened in 100 years. A world war. A Great Depression. Societal changes and a complete revolution brought on by technology.

And a Toms River woman has been alive for all of those events and two pandemics.

On Sunday, Helen D, a resident of Brandywine Assisted Living in Toms River, will turn 100. It's a milestone her family hoped to help her celebrate in person.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted those plans, of course.

"Due to the current pandemic and assisted living rules, she is unable to come out for a family celebration like we would like to give her," her granddaughter, Barbara Judge, said.

Instead, her family is hoping to shower Helen, whom they call Nana Bean, with love through the mail.

"We wanted to try to do something very special for her," Judge said. "One of the ways we thought of as a family was to ask everyone that would be interested in participating to send her a simple birthday card to make this 100th birthday the best it can be!"
