Hooper Avenue's Gaping Hole Discovered By Toms River Fire Crew
The hole in the middle of the Hooper Avenue travel lane shut down traffic that was light on a Saturday afternoon.
TOMS RIVER, NJ — A hole has opened up on Hooper Avenue on Saturday afternoon, causing police to close the road. Toms River police labeled it a sinkhole.
The hole was discovered Saturday afternoon by Toms River Fire Company 1 as one of its engines returned from a call. The fire department blocked the lanes while police and public works employees were called.
The fire department estimated the hole as 10 to 12 feet deep. It appeared to be at least 2 feet across and at least 5 feet from side to side, right in the middle of the travel lane.

Traffic was very light on Hooper Avenue Saturday afternoon, so the road closure in both directions between Lafayette and Franklin avenues didn't cause much of an issue. The hole was just before Ray Street in the southbound lanes.
