The snow is still falling in some areas, but reports are coming in to the National Weather Service of snow totals. Toms River is among the towns reporting the highest totals so far, with 5 inches of snow.
Toms River police are urging motorists to stay off the roads unless it’s absolutely necessary to travel. “Please give the crews a few more hours to clean it up before you head out. A quick trip to the store or an unnecessary car ride is not worth the chance. You could end up with a wrecked car or an injury. You may be a great driver in the snow but the person behind you may not be. It isn’t worth it.”

Road salt will need more time to be effective because with the temperatures still well below freezing, the salt won’t warm road surfaces up enough to completely melt it, officials note. While temperatures are near 20 degrees now, they are expected to stay below freezing all day and fall into the teens tonight.
