Man Fatally Shot In Toms River Police Incident Identified: Prosecutor

Breaking: The preliminary investigation said the shooting happened during a physical altercation, the prosecutor's office said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Authorities on Wednesday released the identity of the man who was killed Tuesday in a police-involved shooting in Toms River.

Christopher Apostolos, 56, of 190 Edgewood Court, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato announced.

The investigation into the incident is continuing, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the prosecutor's office. Della Fave released preliminary report details Tuesday night and said a full report would be provided when the investigation is complete.

Della Fave said the preliminary report said Toms River police were called to the Silver Ridge Apartments complex about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a person believed to be needing mental health intervention services.

Two officers responded, Della Fave said, and when they found the man, now identified as Apostolos, a physical altercation took place, according to the preliminary report.

"That altercation led to the discharge of a service weapon(s)," Della Fave said in a written statement issued to news organizations.

MONOC Unit 212 responded to the scene to provide medical assistance and pronounced Apostolos dead at 1:06 p.m., he said. An autopsy by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office will be conducted, and a full report regarding the cause and manner of death will be included in future investigative findings, Della Fave said. The Major Crimes Unit of the prosecutor's office and the Crime Scene Investigation unit of the Ocean County Sheriff's office responded as well.

"When all the facts and circumstances surrounding the event are definitively confirmed a full account will be issued to the press by our office," he said.

Those reports are typically reviewed by the state Attorney General's office as well.
