Motorcyclist Dies In Route 37 Crash: Toms River PD

A Kearny man died of injuries he suffered in the crash, police said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A motorcyclist has died of injuries he suffered Thursday evening in a crash on Route 37 in Toms River, police said.

Shawn Mathewson, 34 of Kearny, is the man who died as a result of the crash, said Jillian Messina, media specialist for the Toms River Police Department.

Police were called to the crash site just west of Vaughn Avenue at 5:09 p.m., with the motorcyclist, who was driving a 2004 Yamaha, reported as not breathing, Messina said.

The preliminary investigation found Mathewson rear-ended a 2016 Crysler driven by Ayesha Mirandaalves, 18, of Newark, who had braked as traffic ahead of her stopped, Messina said.

Mathewson succumbed to his injuries and was taken to Community Medical Center, Toms River, she said.

The accident is being investigated by Toms River Police Traffic Safety Officer Terry Warren and was assisted by Safety Officer Steve Schwartz and Officer Ryan Fitzgerald. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department and State Diversion Team also responded.

Two lanes of Route 37 were for the accident investigation, but reopened later in the evening.

Traffic was backed up past Washington Street due to the lane closures.
