Ocean County Offering Self-Defense Classes For Women

The courses for women will be held in March and April.

TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department is offering classes for women looking to learn the basics of self-defense.

The two-hour course will teach basic striking, as well as how to escape from holds, chokes and grabs. The defensive moves are taught from both standing and ground positions.

The course is open teens and women ages 16 or older and will be taught by Dan Chandler, a second-degree black belt and American Top Team Level 3 MMA instructor with years of experience working with children and adults.

This is the first time a self-defense course is being offered by the county recreation department.

"Knowing the basics of self-defense helps us increase our levels of awareness so we are more in tune with our surroundings and any potential danger," said Virginia Haines, Ocean County Freeholder Director and the liaison to the parks and recreation department. "This is an excellent chance to learn the basics on how to defend yourself."

Class attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing, and bring $20, either exact cash or a check made payable to Trench Sports LLC, for the session.

Ocean County is offering the course four times, on Saturdays in March and early April.

Classes are scheduled for March 16, 23, 30 and April 4 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Program Room at the Ocean County Parks Administration Building, 1198 Brandon Road, Toms River.

Registration is required and there is a $5 per person registration fee. Space is limited. To register or for more information, contact the Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department at 732-506-9090.
