Pedestrian 'Critical' After Being Hit By Car: Toms River Police

Breaking: Antonia Rinaldi, 80, was hit Friday night; police said the initial investigation ruled out cell phone use and DWI.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — An 80-year-old woman was airlifted to the hospital after she was hit by a car while crossing New Hampshire Avenue Friday night, Toms River police said Saturday.

Antonia Rinaldi, 80, of Toms River, was listed in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, on Saturday, said Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department.

Rinaldi was crossing New Hampshire Avenue from west to east near Silverton Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday night when she was hit by a 2008 Pontiac G6 driven by an 18-year-old from Toms River, Stocco said. The car was southbound on New Hampshire Avenue at the time, he said.

Stocco said cell phone use did not appear to be a factor, nor did driver impairment, from the initial investigation.

The driver told police she did not see Rinaldi until she hit her with passenger-side front fender of the car, Stocco said.
