Police-Involved Shooting In Toms River Under Investigation: Authorities

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Silverton section of the township Sunday evening, according to authorities.

Capt. Jack Sramaty of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office confirmed there was a shooting and that the prosecutor's office was investigating.

"The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office can confirm that a police-involved shooting involving members of the Toms River Police Department occurred earlier this evening in the Silverton section of Toms River," Sramaty said by email. "As per the Attorney General's directive regarding such incidents, this matter is being investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Unit with the full cooperation of the Toms River Police Department.

"The investigation is in a preliminary stage. Once details become available they will be released in the form of a press release," he said.

Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said an incident had taken place at 6:44 p.m. but provided no details except to say no police officers were injured.

Residents in the area who contacted Patch said they heard gunshots about that time. One resident said he heard an officer repeatedly yelling "show me your hands, don't move" before hearing the gunshots.

"It was faint but I could clearly hear what they were saying," the man said.

Residents of the area said the incident occurred on Sand Creek Lane, but that could not be immediately confirmed.
