Popeyes Chicken Coming To Toms River: Report

The fast-food restaurant will take a spot on Route 37 and will be the first of its brand in Ocean County.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River will be getting a taste of Louisiana, fast-food style, in the coming months, according to a report.

The Asbury Park Press reported Popeyes Lousiana Kitchen, a fast-food chicken restaurant, is under construction at 199 Route 37.

The project, approved as "Toms River Chicken LLC" at the February meeting of the Planning Board, will be next to Wolfie's Deli. It will be the first Popeyes in Ocean County.

The Planning Board information said the restaurant will be 2,258 square feet.

Popeyes opened 45 years ago in New Orleans, according to the company's website, first as "Chicken on the Run," serving traditional Southern-fried chicken. It was renamed Popeyes, after Popeye Doyle of the movie "The French Connection," and the focus shifted to spicy, New Orleans-style chicken.
