September 15, 1961: Community Medical Center Opens
Formerly known as Community Memorial Hospital
It's now more than 50 years since Community Medical Center opened its doors in Toms River.
On September 15, 1961, Community Memorial Hospital, as it was first known, opened in Toms River with 50 beds, 15 physicians on staff and 90 employees.
Today, Community Medical Center, an affiliate of Barnabas Health, has evolved into a regional medical center becoming Ocean County’s largest non-teaching hospital and most active healthcare facility.

Community Medical Center cares for more than 28,000 inpatients, 127,700 outpatients and 100,000 emergency department patients each year with 592 beds, more than 670 physicians on staff and 2,900 employees.
