New Jersey Snow Update: Winter Weather Advisory Issued
Snow is expected for N.J. overnight, making roads potentially treacherous. School closings are possible. Come back here for updates.
The threat of snow has increased in New Jersey now that more than half the state has been issued a winter weather advisory. And it could mean that parents should be on the lookout for possible school closings, too.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for almost the entire state, while a winter weather advisory has been sent for all counties from Mercer and Middlesex and south. But snow is in the forecast for all 21 counties, and it's expected to hit Thursday night.

The Friday morning commute also could be treacherous as many as 4 inches could fall. A blast of Arctic air could also bring temperatures down into the 20s. Most of the snow is expected for Middlesex and Mercer counties and south.

Here is what the National Weather Service is saying:
- Snow accumulations...1 to 3 inches...with locally higher amounts to 4 inches possible in central New Jersey
- Timing...snow will overspread the area from west to east between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. this evening. The snow becomes steady and moderate at times late this evening and overnight, then quickly end from west to east between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. early Friday morning.
- Impacts...expect hazardous travel tonight with roads becoming snow-covered. Untreated roads and sidewalks may still be slippery heading into the Friday morning commute even after the snow ends.
- Temperatures...steady in the upper 20s and lower 30s.
- Precautionary/preparedness actions... a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while driving.

Once snow begins to coat the pavement, bridges and overpasses will become slippery before other parts of the road.
“While this certainly will not be a major snowfall, the timing of this covering of snow will make many roads slippery for the Friday morning commute,” Thompson said.
