TOMS RIVER, NJ — Cedar Grove Road may soon have a uniform speed limit its entire length under an ordinance introduced by the Toms River Township Council.

The ordinance, introduced at the Jan. 25 council meeting, would reduce part of the road from 40 mph to 35 mph.

The change is the result of a request from Ocean County Engineer John Ernst in late December, which was prompted by an investigation into crash data along the road following a resident's complaints about speeding along the road, which includes two sections, one from Hooper Avenue across Bay Avenue to a dead end, and the second that runs from just north of the dead end to France Street.

In a Dec. 28 letter to the township, Ernst said the county's investigation found a speed survey and an analysis of crash data did not support reducing the speed from 35 mph, but he said the county did support reducing the stretch from Hooper Avenue to Clifton Avenue from 40 mph to make the speed limit consistent.

The resident's complaint was about the stretch around Edken Avenue, which falls in the stretch that currently is 40 mph.

The ordinance's second reading and final vote is anticipated to be held at the Feb. 8 council meeting.
