State Football Playoffs: Toms River North Stopped By Cherokee

Mariners fall in sectional semifinals after a strong rebound from 2013 season

When Toms River North looks back on this football season, the Mariners will see a lot of experiences they can build on next year.

Not that this was a bad season, mind you; a 6-5 finish a year after going 1-9 is a significant improvement. And with a quarterback who led the team to the sectional semifinals this year as a sophomore, anything is possible.

The Mariners were knocked out of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs Friday night by Cherokee, falling 37-14 in Marlton. Quarterback Mike Husni threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Craig and rushed for an 8-yard touchdown for North, according to NJ.com.

But Toms RIver North couldn’t contain the defending champion Chiefs (7-3), who got three touchdown passes from Evan Powell.

Husni was 10 of 16 passing for 135 yards, with one interception, but the Mariners were unable to get much going on the ground.
