TOMS RIVER, NJ — There are new businesses coming to Toms River and some that have newly opened in recent weeks, as the township continues to emerge from the effects of the pandemic.

Here are some of the new offerings in Toms River, and a look at businesses that are slated to be coming to the township:

Vito's Sandwiches & Specialties, Ortley Beach: This sandwich shop held its grand opening in late June. It offers hot and cold classic Italian sandwiches, steak sandwiches and after 4 p.m., pasta dinners. You also can purchase fresh mozzarella, long hot peppers and other specialties deli-style, but you have to call ahead. Located at 2304 Route 35 & First Avenue.

Planet Fitness and Wingstop, Toms River Shopping Plaza: The Route 37 shopping center is set to have two new occupants, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Planet Fitness is set to open in the former Modell's Sporting Goods space, which was vacated by the sporting goods company in mid-2020, according to the report. Planet Fitness has locations all over the country and more than 70 in New Jersey, including one on Fischer Boulevard and one in neighboring South Toms River.

Wingstop, meanwhile, is set to go into the former Liberty Travel space, the Asbury Park Press report said. Wingstop is all about chicken wings and has a variety of flavors from Hawaiian and lemon chicken to mango habanero, and for the heat lovers, atomic. The chain has 1,400 U.S. stores, but just one other at the Jersey Shore, in Neptune.

Mahana Fresh, Crossroads Shopping Center: The departure of Smashburger left an opening at the shopping center, and Mahana Fresh is set to fill it, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Mahana Fresh has 10 locations around the country and the Toms River restaurant will be the first in New Jersey. It offers build-a-bowl meals made with fresh ingredients chicken, steak, tuna or tofu and vegetables over a bed of coconut rice or spinach or kale salad. The anticipated opening date is in August, the Asbury Park Press report said.
