Toms River Police Accepting Applications For Probationary Officer

There is a three-step application process that opens Friday.

If you’ve thought about becoming a police officer, here is your opportunity.

The Toms River Police Department will be accepting applications beginning Friday for the position of probationary police officer, Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the department, announced Wednesday.

It is a full-time position in the department, with a starting salary of $41,616. Stocco said candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 34 at the time of appointment and must have a four-year college degree or a minimum of 64 college credits combined with two years of full-time active duty military or law enforcement experience.

There are three parts to the application process, he said:

  • A written test, to be administered Sept. 12.
  • A physical task assessment and swimming test, Oct. 10.
  • Oral interviews in November and December 2015.

The physical task assessment consists of a police pursuit event, fire rescue event, and a rapid aid endurance run. The swimming test consists of two lengths of the pool totaling 50 yards. The applicant must then recover a weighted object from the bottom of the pool and place the object on the swim deck, he said.

Stocco said the application window closes July 31.

“Please do not call with questions that are already answered in our published instructions and application packet. Due to the high volume of applicants, phone inquiries will not be returned,” Stocco said. Information not covered in the application packet or instructions can be obtained by emailing Sgt. Pat Dellane at pdellane@trpolice.org.
