Toms River South Students Deliver Thanksgiving To Needy Families
The school's National Honor Society raised funds that fed 32 families a holiday meal.
TOMS RIVER, NJ — For the 23rd year, needy Toms River families were able to enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal due to the fundraising efforts of the members of the Toms River South National Honor Society.
The students of the National Honor Society sold Gobble Grams, candy and messages for friends, for $2 each during homeroom in order to raise funds to purchase the dinners from the Ohana Grill in Lavallette, owned by Toms River South business teacher Dana Costello and her husband, James.
On Tuesday, the honor society members delivered 32 full dinners, enough to feed more than 300 people, via school bus during the day, said Mary Highton, the adviser to the Toms River South National Honor Society.

Ohana Grill stepped in to provide the dinners four years ago, after Foodtown closed and other stores were unable to provide the meals at a price close to what Foodtown offered. Families receive a fully cooked dinner consisting of a turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, rolls, and a pie.
All families are of students who attend Toms River High School South, Highton said.
