Veterans Honored At Toms River School's Annual Ceremony

Take A Veteran To School Day was a chance for all the students to learn more about men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — More than 20 veterans were honored Friday as Hooper Avenue Elementary School held its annual "Take A Veteran To School" program.

The program, which welcomed veterans from various branches of the military, included a presentation by Assemblyman John Catalano, who spoke about George T. Schultz, a distinguished World War II Purple Heart recipient who served in the Philippines. Schultz, who died recently, is the grandfather of a Hooper Avenue teacher, officials said.

A group of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led the pledge of allegiance, which was followed by the national anthem. Principal Jason Hughes and Supervisor of Instruction Christina Manna welcomed the veterans.

After that, the veterans were treated to a short show by Hooper Avenue kindergarten, first and second grade students who performed songs including the Armed Forces Medley, during which veterans stood when their branch of the service was mentioned. Music teachers Sarah Vollenbroek and Eve Szakal directed the children.

The veterans spoke to the students about their service in the military, the training they endured and the sacrifices that they made. The students were able to take a close look at a Blackhawk helicopter that was landed at the school, and check out a trailered boat from the Coast Guard.
