WATCH: Donovan Catholic's Alyssa Wilson Sets National Shot Put Record
Breaking: The Griffins' senior is the first high school girl to throw the shot more than 57 feet in an indoor competition.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Donovan Catholic senior Alyssa Wilson has set so many records that at times it seems like it's no big deal.
On Tuesday, however, Wilson set a record that is a very big deal: a new national high school record in the indoor shot put.
Wilson heaved the shot — an 8.8-pound steel ball — 57 feet, 5.5 inches to win the Eastern States Championships in New York on Tuesday night, breaking the 2014 record set by Raven Saunders of Charleston, South Carolina, by 10 inches, and became the first high school girl to surpass 57 feet, according to the website Mile Split NJ.

The record came on her third throw out of six, according to Donovan Catholic, which said her series of throws was as follows: 56 feet, 2.5 inches; foul; 57-5.5; 56-7.5; 54-4; 53-5.
Wilson, who in November signed a national letter of intent to attend UCLA on a track and field scholarship, has been a highly regarded thrower for the Griffins since her freshman year and has won a number of titles, including both the indoor and the outdoor NJSIAA Meet of Champions titles in the shot put.

The reigning national champion in the outdoor shot put, where Wilson set a state record with a throw of 55 feet, 9-1/4 inches, had a previous best during this indoor season of 56 feet, 2.5 inches at the Ocean County Championships, according to Mile Split NJ.
Wilson also won a bronze medal last July in the women's outdoor shot put at the World Junior Championships (under 20-year-old) in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a throw of 53 feet, 5 inches, according to NJ.com.
Saunders, who had been the only other high school girl to break 56 feet in the indoor shot put according to Mile Split, also holds the high school record in the outdoor shot put with a mark of 56 feet, 8-1/4 inches according to NJ.com. Saunders, who competes for Mississippi, is the reigning NCAA champion and NCAA record holder, according to NJ.com.
Wilson also competes in the discus and the hammer throw.
