WATCH: Toms River North Football Wins Class A South Championship

The Mariners defeated Central Regional 34-7 to clinch its first solo division title since 2008.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River North Mariners are division champions again.

For the first time since 2008, the Mariners have won their first outright Shore Conference Class A South championship, as they beat Central Regional 34-7 Friday night in Berkeley to clinch the title.

The Mariners shared the Class A South title last year with Brick and Brick Memorial. But Toms River North has gone 9-0 so far this season and was a perfect 7-0 in Class A South. Friday night, they got a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Mike Husni, whose first score on a 33-yard sprint up the middle put Toms River North in the lead for good.

Husni finished with more than 350 yards combined between rushing and passing to lead the team.

Central (7-2, 6-1) scored the first touchdown of the game on a 15-yard pass from Joe Fowler to Blake Horgan, as Toms River North struggled in the first quarter, fumbling the ball twice and committing several penalties.

Darrion Carrington scored on a 31-yard pass from Husni to tie the game, and Husni's first touchdown made it 14-7 at halftime. The break seemed to be just what Toms River North needed, because the Mariners' defense settled down, corralling Central running back Mike Bickford, holding him to just 89 yards rushing. Toms River North also kept Bickford's offensive backfield mates from doing much to make up for it.

A 14-yard touchdown by Daryn Blackwell put the Mariners ahead 20-7 after Central blocked the extra point. After that, Husni would not be corralled, zigging and zagging his way to a 30-yard touchdown with 6:28 to go to put Toms River North up 27-7.

Central intercepted Husni in the end zone on North's next series, giving the Golden Eagles some last-ditch hopes. But after the Mariners recovered a fumble, it was Husni who delivered the final blow, breaking several tackles and refusing to go down until the getting to the 2 before the Golden Eagles wrestled him down, setting up Parker Day's touchdown that made it 34-7.

Head coach Dave Oizerowitz praised his team's effort in achieving sole possession of the Class A South crown and earning the top seed in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs.
