Woman Dies From Head-On Crash On Route 9; DUI Suspected, Prosecutor Says

A man was hospitalized following the crash that shut down Route 9 at Whitty Road, the prosecutor's office said.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A woman was killed and a man injured Saturday night in a head-on crash on Route 9 in Toms River, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

Neither driver was identified on Sunday.

The woman was driving north on Route 9 in a Honda Accord when it was hit head-on by a Volkswagen Jetta just after 11 p.m. Saturday, the prosecutor's office said.

The Volkswagen was headed south on Route 9 when it hit a guardrail on the passenger side of the car, which caused it to lose control and hit the Honda, authorities said.

The woman driving the Honda was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced dead, the prosecutor's office said.

The man driving the Volkswagen was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with non-life-threatening injuries, the prosecutor's office said. He was listed as stable on Sunday.

Toms River police officers who responded to the crash observed the driver of the Volkswagen appeared to be impaired and his blood was drawn under a search warrant at the hospital, the prosecutor's office said.

The crash is under investigation by the Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad of the prosecutor's office, the Toms River Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff's Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
