Unforgiveness & Heart Health: The Hidden Hormone Connection
Unforgiveness elevates cortisol, disrupts hormones, and impacts heart health. Learn how forgiveness protects women's energy

As Heart Health Month comes to a close, most of us have heard the familiar reminders: watch your sodium intake, exercise more, monitor your blood pressure.
But there is another condition of the heart we rarely talk about.
Unforgiveness.

Over the years, I’ve worked with women who were doing “all the right things.” They were adjusting their diets, walking daily, taking supplements, and trying to manage stress. Yet they still struggled with fatigue, heart palpitations, stubborn weight gain, and hormone imbalance.
When we talked deeper, another pattern emerged.
They were carrying something heavy.

A betrayal.A disappointment.A painful memory.A wound they never gave themselves permission to process.
What many women don’t realize is that unresolved resentment and chronic emotional stress activate the body’s stress response. When the brain perceives emotional threat, it releases cortisol — the primary stress hormone.
Cortisol, in small amounts, protects us.In excess, it disrupts us.
Elevated cortisol over time can:
- Disrupt estrogen balance
- Increase inflammation
- Contribute to weight gain
- Drain energy levels
- Increase cardiovascular risk
The body does not distinguish between physical danger and emotional distress. To your nervous system, ongoing resentment feels like ongoing threat.
And the heart pays the price.
Research in behavioral medicine and stress physiology continues to show that chronic anger and unforgiveness are associated with higher inflammatory markers and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. In women especially, hormone fluctuations during perimenopause and menopause can magnify the impact of prolonged stress.
But there is hope.
Forgiveness is often misunderstood. It does not mean excusing harmful behavior. It does not mean forgetting what happened. It does not require reconciliation.
Forgiveness is a release.
It is choosing not to allow yesterday’s pain to dictate today’s biology.
I often remind the women I serve that healing is not only nutritional — it is emotional and spiritual. When stress hormones decrease, inflammation lowers. When inflammation lowers, the body can begin to restore balance. Energy improves. Sleep deepens. Hormones stabilize.
Sometimes the missing piece in heart health is not found in a prescription — but in permission to let go.
If you have been experiencing persistent fatigue, hormone imbalance, emotional eating, or even heart palpitations, it may be worth gently asking yourself:
What am I still holding?
Heart health is more than cholesterol numbers and blood pressure readings. It is also about the unseen weight we carry.
As a Christian counselor and integrative women’s health practitioner, I have seen firsthand how aligning emotional healing with practical health strategies transforms women’s lives. When we address stress, support the body nutritionally, and cultivate forgiveness, the results extend far beyond the heart.
They affect energy. They affect mood. They affect hormones. They affect overall well-being.
The connection between the spiritual heart and the physical heart is profound.
As Psalm 147:3 reminds us:“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
This Heart Health Month, perhaps the most powerful thing you can do for your heart is not just walk an extra mile — but release an old burden.
Your heart — physically and emotionally — deserves that freedom.
