Kinnelon BOE Eyes Parental Bill Of Rights Policy. Community Can Review Draft

The proposal drew questions at a recent Citizens Advisory meeting; district officials say the document organizes existing legal protections.

KINNELON, NJ - Kinnelon Public Schools is moving forward with a proposed Parental Bill of Rights policy, with a first reading scheduled for the June 9 Board of Education meeting.

The draft will be posted publicly with the June 4 board agenda materials to allow for community review ahead of the meeting.

The proposal generated significant discussion at a recent Citizens Advisory meeting, where parents raised questions about the district's motivation for pursuing the policy, its purpose, and which other districts have adopted similar measures.

District administration said the intent is to consolidate existing parental rights, district practices, and legal protections into a single, accessible document.

The policy would address curriculum transparency, access to student information, communication protocols, school safety, parent involvement, and privacy protections — organizing rights and practices that are already in place rather than establishing new ones.
