Butler Police Advising Community Of New E-Bike Regulations

BUTLER, NJ — The Butler Police Department is reminding residents of e-bike regulations and are beginning accepting appointments for e-bike licensing and registration on Friday.

We’ve worked hard to update our processes and resources to begin issuing licenses and registrations for e-bike riders in New Jersey,” Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Rosalie Johnson said. “We strongly encourage e-bike riders to utilize the guidance on the NJMVC’s website to familiarize themselves with new requirements for safe and legal e-bike operation, and to book appointments, as needed, to get their registration and license.”

The new requirements are being implemented under legislation enacted in January 2026. They go into effect on July 19 for:

• Low-speed electric bicycle: A pedal-assisted bicycle with a helper motor that provides assistance while pedaling up to 20 mph.
• Motorized bicycle: A pedal-assisted bicycle that includes an engine under 50 cubic centimeters, among other qualifying specifications.

The NJMVC has also published step-by-step instructions and resources, including forms and frequently asked questions.
