Bloomingdale Police Officer Saved Suicidal Man's Life

Sgt. Daniel Fletcher was recognized for helping save a suicidal man's life last night.

BLOOMINGDALE, NJ— A Bloomingdale Police Officer was recognized Tuesday night for helping to save a suicidal man's life.

Sgt. Daniel Fletcher was awarded with a plaque and a key to the city at Tuesday night's town council meeting for how he handed a mental health crises last month.

While responding to a township residence in January for a welfare check, Fletcher noticed something off. After knocking and trying to get the attention of the resident, Fletcher followed his instincts and went inside.

A man was inside the home, with a a gun pressed underneath his chin, police said in a statement. Fletcher held a conversation with the man, eventually disarming the man from his loaded gun.

The man was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, and is doing "much better," police said.
