Laurelwood Arboretum
Laurelwood Arboretum in Wayne-why not take a surprisingly delightful free tour of the grounds? You'll be glad you did!
On Saturday, April 30, a friend and I visited the Laurelwood Arboretum in Wayne for a free guided tour which was advertised in the Wayne Community Adult School brochure. I had worked in Wayne for over 30 years, but did not know of this arboretum, so thought it would be a fun experience into the unknown.
Dorothy and John Knippenberg, who were residents of the Wayne community, purchased a 30-acre botanical garden in the 1930's known as Laurelwood Arboretum. They were renowened in the horticultural world for their hydrids, beauty, tranquility and the dedicated knowledge of its founder, Dorothy Knippenberg. Upon the Knippenbergs passing, the property was bequeathed to the Wayne Parks and Recreation Department in 2006. The arboretum is maintained through an agreement with the non-profit volunteer organization, Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum (FOLA), the Township of Wayne and the active participation of the many dedicated volunteers.
Volunteers are needed in many areas, as noted on their website. To volunteer, please call 973-202-9579 or email them at info@laurelwoodarboretum.org.

This park is open to the public and the free guided tours are a true bonus when you go to the park. If you are handicapped, you can arrange for a free tour in a golf cart and you will get the same type of tour without walking. Even though I am not much of a hiker, this tour was slow-paced and I enjoyed the walk without feeling exhausted. There are no big hills or valleys to contend with - only a lovely rolling path throughout the property with many places to sit and relax. There is also a lovely gazebo that many wedding parties had taken advantage of for their special day's pictures. A small donation is requested.

Being that pictures are worth 10,000 words, please enjoy a few of the 162 pictures I had taken on my two hour walk through these lovely woods. I have since become a member and have signed up to be a volunteer.
