Tiny Bubbles
They're not in the wine, but the tiny bubbles from our first swimming lesson definitely made me feel happy and made me feel fine.
Lesson one started off with our instructor asking us our names, why we were taking this class and to self-assess our swimming abilities thus far. We then reviewed the basic components of swimming: bubbles (breathing), circles (arm strokes) and kicks (leg movements). Our group was small, with only five students, so our instructor was able to give each of us individualized attention. She evaluated our comfort level in the water by having us blow bubbles face down and total submersion.
Since everyone passed with flying colors, from there we progressed quickly to floating and “rocket ships” (moving through the water using only leg kicks while arms are outstretched, hands kept clasped together and head remains down).
In just 30 minutes, our instructor had us all moving across the pool using our arms and legs! The biggest challenge for me was coordinating the arm-and-leg movements which I’ll have to practice before our next lesson. It doesn’t come easy yet, but by the end of the lesson we all left with a newfound sense of confidence in the water, which, from what I’ve read, is half the battle in learning how to swim, and really, anything if you think about it.
